Malaysia To Reopen International Borders on April 1

Two years after Malaysia closed its borders on March 18, 2020 in the wake of a global pandemic, Malaysia will reopen its international borders on April 1, 2022, allowing quarantine-free travel and tourism. The move is part of the country’s “Transitioning to Endemicity” phase, to revive the country’s economy, especially the tourism industry, which has been greatly affected by the pandemic. In line with this, the government will also lift a slew of domestic restrictions including allowing round-the-clock eateries and events at full capacity.

Malaysian returnees and foreign visitors entering the country, however, will need to adhere to some protocols, although restrictions have been loosened. All visitors who are fully vaccinated are not required to undergo quarantine upon arrival but must undergo a RT-PCR test two days before departure and a rapid test (RTK-Ag) within 24 hours upon arrival. Quarantine-free entry is also allowed for children and teenagers below the age of 17, regardless of their vaccination status.

Travellers who are not fully vaccinated or unvaccinated will need to undergo a five-day quarantine after arriving in Malaysia and need to show proof of exemption if they have health reasons to remain unvaccinated. Foreign travellers are also no longer required to apply through MyTravelPass but are required to download and activate the MySejahtera app, must complete a pre-departure form and have insurance coverage (COVID-19 and travel).
